Who's that man hanging in the window by
(Can it be?) suction cups? It's Arthur Barry, of course. Who is Arthur Barry? He could easily be referred to as the Suction Cup King, being the sole inventor of Decorative Suction Cups. He founded his company,
Presto Galaxy Suction Cups, Inc., with his father in 1978. At first, they sold bird feeders, then branched out in 1981 to suction cups. Today, Barry estimates that about $100,000,000.00 a year is spent on
clear Suction Cups. His company alone sells over 20 million cups a year, and features the largest variety of Suction Cups in the world - over 70 types of different sizes, shapes and designs. Now, Barry's goal is to
compete with decorative magnets. He wants to show that Suction Cups can do everything that magnets can - only better.
Boasting the only "Suction Cup Museum" in the world (in his office), Barry has
Suction Cups of every design available today, as well as "dozens of Suction Cups" he plans on coming up with in the future. Barry is also proudly in possession of
patents dating back to 1882 using rubber Suction Cups with clips for holding letter, cards and photographs in store windows. He takes this business - past and present -
seriously. When you talk to him, he'll tell you things like "a thinner cup is more desirable than a thicker one." He feels a competitor's cup is too thick, and he's
always ready to face - and outdo - the competition. Presto Galaxy Suction Cups, Inc. is one of the two top leading distributors and
manufacturers of Suction Cups in the World. Barry might attribute much of his success to his wonderful sense of humor and willingness to adjust to the times. His
company still has a line of bird feeders "where people have stated that even in the best of economic times, our business is for the birds," and, Presto still carries the
bathroom line of Suction Cups his father designed years ago. But he's also starting up a "Souvenir Suction Cups" line - emblazoned with names of states. He says, "I've
seen tremendous growth in this field." Looks like it's going to keep on growing. |
